Album of the Week: Isaac Stern
Hirschfeld produced a number of covers for Columbia Records over the years from Dr. Doolittle to Aerosmith. His drawing of legendary violinist Isaac Stern for a 1978 release of Mozart compositions seems to use fewer lines than strings on a violin, yet captures Stern’s concentration and commitment to the music. The drawing so captured Stern that it was reused in 1990 for this recording of Stern’s favorite violin encores. The same year, Hirschfeld updated the image to show an aging musician still lost in the music of his instrument.
